The search box is not working again. Now we're getting an "unauthorized" error. It is 9:41 PM and I am on the phone with a yahoo technician who is possibly from India. They are researching the problem. They just hung up on me at 9:42 PM. I really don't want to call them back. The following search box is not working at this time:

You can use the following Google Search Box to Search Yeahpot.com Instead

503 Service Unavailable No server is availabe to handle this request
Yahoo is at it again. I'm now receiving the following error intermittently on my site on various pages: (503 Service Unavailable No server is available to handle this request) This is the error I'm frequently getting on the website this past few weeks. The links are stalling and then this error appears. It's very aggravating and slowing down my editing and replacing the website these incompetent people at yahoo deleted in July of 2015. It's always something with yahoo. It's a terrible service. Although it would be a monumental task, I want to eventually find a service that I can move to permanently. I've been looking, but so far I can find nothing. Does anyone else get these error messages when accessing the website? Let me know at yaypotter@yahoo.com. Yahoo "technicians" claim they are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. Frankly, I don't have a lot of faith in these people. They're very much a group of badly trained individuals.

Much of the information on my website comes from census records and information from The LDS hosted familysearch.org a wonderful site hosted by the LDS Church and which has been instrumental in assisting me to replace many of my wrongfully deleted by yahoo files of 2015. Thanks very much to this wonderful site I am possibly able to recover my "destroyed by yahoo" website.

Site search is again working. After spending quite a few hours researching the search option on my website, I called yahoo and talked to some of their "technicians" in India. They had no idea what was wrong with the 25 year old website search button created by yahoo back in the first days of my website creation. I finally gave up on their "techs" and reminded them that they had just recently in 2015 deleted my entire website with a few other choice reminders (in my nicest voice of course). After several tweaks to the site, I replaced the old simple site search button with yahoo's more complex search option and took off the site search from the php files. It is now working, so I have put it back and it now produces search results. I hope it is useful to everyone. Thank you for your patience.

You will find the search box at the bottom of the page over top of the yahoo search box. They are both from yahoo, but the one that became unusable was the simple search box. I'm happy to see it back as a functional part of the site. I'm placing the search box here below this paragraph for your convenience.

The Yahoo site search buttons on all the pages are now not working. I don't know what is going on with Yahoo, but it is always something. This company is really terrible. Every day I hear someone saying what an awful company they are and I whole heartedly agree. They have deleted all my files in July 2015 even though I was current in my payements. As a matter of fact, I pay yearly for this service, so there was no way non-payment could have been an issue when they deleted all of my files. By the way, for those of you who believe files can be recovered.... sorry... that is just not true.

Currently, the problem is that when I do a site search from any page on my site, now there are 0 results. This is unacceptable. If you can't search a site, the site is worthless. For this reason, please understand that I will be moving my web service to another web hosting service in the very near future. I have had it with this awful company.

The only way you can currently search this site is to use Yahoo's very poor search box at the bottom of the page and now at the bottom of all the php files. That means that any page ending in .php is going to have yahoo's horrible search box which I literally hate. Yahoo search box is set up to take you to pay sites first and then way down the list are the free sites like mine.

Unless you use the Options link out to the side of the "search" button. That is where this search venue does a good job. Take a little time and use the options button, enter your search criteria on the second line at the top and continue down the page as follows;

1. "Show results with" - "the exact phrase" where you will put the name of the person you are seeking;
2. Site/Domain select "only search in this domain/site (yeahpot.com) without the quotes
3. Skip File Format
4. Skip Safe Search Filter
5. Skip Country:
6. Skip Languages:
7. Skip Number of Results
8. Click the Yahoo Search Button at the Bottom and your results will come up on a page of their own.

We've lost a precious cousin, John Christopher Reynolds 6 Jan 2020. I was unaware that he was ill. I'm so sorry for the loss of John. He contributed many photos and much information about his wonderful family. My heart felt condolences go out to his family and friends for their loss. His obituary link is at the following link: https://www.letcherfuneralhomeinc.com/notices/John-Reynolds His page on our site is at John Christopher "Johnny" Reynolds.

All links to the Rootsweb site are not working now because of some claims at their site by their "security technician" that there was a "security problem". I doubt that very seriously, because as you can see by previous posts, they have been slowly getting rid of all the free services. Unscrupulous to say the least after having used thousands of people's information on their websites and then "lost" their free site information. I will remove the bad links as soon as I'm able, but this will probably take a while. This is why I quit linking to other sites. They usually end up deleting their pages or going completely down.

Genealogy sites such as Ancestry are trying their best to become a monopoly and succeeding quite well in the process. Many of the free sites are closing after being bought out by ancestry. Sad but true. In my case, they had Yahoo aiding them who completely deleted all of my information with no warning and for no reason whatsoever. Sometimes my conspiracy theory paranoia leads me to consider that perhaps they did it (deleted my site) on purpose just for Ancestry. After all, Ancestry is a very powerful monopoly organization with lots of influential money to pass around.

Recently, rootsweb did away with the guestbook. I have a copy of the old one up to the end of 2014 at the following link: Guestbook Backup. I was very happy to have this backup because it has been lovely to read all the posts from our visitors through the years. These freebies at Rootsweb are all being shut down and they are just deleting them with very little warning, so, if you have things at Rootsweb, you had better save them to your computer because they may suddenly be gone with no warning. That is how these sites sucker you in and then use your material for their own profit. I have kept my information here because I would like to keep our genealogy available to our friends and family as long as possible.

It continues to be a struggle since 2 years and 3 months ago in July of 2015 yahoo wrongly deleted all the wonderful information I had on here with no warning. They were paid in full and nothing was owed to them, but all of a sudden, they hired a new company to manage their servers and these new people are in India. They don't know what they are doing and communicating with them is extremely difficult. I have often wondered if yahoo isn't working with sites like ancestry to get rid of free information like mine. I wouldn't put it past them. Rootsweb has also been very deceitful in their business practices in that they collect information from those of us researching and then get rid of the free stuff, keep our information and start charging for it at ancestry. Not a very nice thing to do. It's a sucker's game. That's why I have tried to keep my information on my own site these past 20 years.

I have several backups now of the new site and each day the site becomes better as I continue to work on it and repair what was left of the information I managed to scrape together. There is a site called archives.org that saved old files from the site a long time ago in 2009, but they added their own links to the pages in place of mine, so therefore archives.org also contributed in their own way to destroy all my work. I am having to take it page by page and correct each and every page individually. All the links are bad and it is quite a task. I have worked on it for 2 years and 3 months now and have made some headway, but there is still a long way to go.

From Annette Potter, Webmaster: I am very sure my sister, Carlene Burkland, will not appreciate this note, but I just can't go on without giving her credit for her most important and greatly appreciated contributions to this website. She is the sole financial supporter of this endeavor and she needs to be appreciated. She has supported this site for several years and I hope she doesn't disapprove of my acknowledging it here. Thank you to my sister, Carlene for all her support throughout the years. I love you, you precious, gracious lady!

July 7, 2017. Most recently I have been working on the census records to make a page for everyone in those particular census records. These census records are a great help to me to allow me to recall what was lost when yahoo deleted my files in July 2015. So far, I have worked on them for 2 years this coming July 15, 2017. Their delete date was July 15, 2015 when yahoo wrongly deleted my site. Since my endeavor, I have made quite a bit of headway. However, I have not updated the links page in some time, but plan to do so in the next few months. I am currently working on the 1850 and 1860 Russell County, Virginia Census. They are a treasure trove. I am now backing up everything I do in several different places to prevent having to go through this awful loss again.

July 21, 2016 4:23 P.M. The Rootsweb Guestbook is back up and running again. Rootsweb claimed maintenance problems and now after quite a bit of editing on my part it seems to work properly. I don't know what Rootsweb is up to, but this constant battle with keeping the guestbook working is a problem. (This morning's post was the following: July 21, 2016: 5:00 A.M. The guestbook at rootsweb is back down again. I'm not sure what, yet. I may just use facebook and be done with it. It was just returned to working status a day or two ago.) I had considered getting rid of the guestbook once and for all. Hopefully it will remain in working order.

Rootsweb sites and guestbook were down about 3 weeks from 25 Feb 2016 to 15 Mar 2016 which is not a good thing. You may want to save your gedcom files to your computers for safe keeping. I really don't know what's going on with them. I have a website there on rootsweb servers and I was working on it to try to update it as much as possible, when it went down, so I was unable to do so for the weeks they were down

21 July, 2016

5:00 A.M. The Rootsweb Guestbook is back down again. It is so erratic, I believe I will just forget about trying to use it. These free sites are just too unstable. For now, I will just use Facebook as a point of direct connection with visitors to the site. I'll post the old rootsweb guestbook comments on a special page in a few days so that we can enjoy reading them. The posts were from all over the country and I have really enjoyed reading them through the years. Too bad we can't use that particular guestbook any more. Can't say we didn't give it a good try.

13 July, 2016

I have put the rootsweb guestbook (not working again 7/21/2016) back up for viewing and posting. It is finally operational again after being down for several days. I have no control over the rootsweb site and they have been having serious problems lately. I don't know what they are doing, but they have a lot of problems. They have also lost many of my files and deleted many of my pages on their free site, but I am working to prevent that in the future by making copies of everything I put up. I am making headway on the new site, so keep checking back and eventually I will have it as complete as possible. I will begin to work on my Letcher County census records to make pages for everyone in it soon. That is one of my most important works and one of the things I really was more disappointed to lose than anything else.

Recovering our website: There are going to be delays in adding the newly edited pages to the list of files I have worked on. I am working on about 20 pages or more per day and just haven't had the time to follow through with the updates. I am also behind in my links pages, but I will continue to work on the site on a daily basis and hope to have a good working site by the end of the year. Since I am the only editor on the site, it is a huge untertaking to do alone, but I am doing as much as possible by myself and am making headway.

Our Rootsweb Guestbook is Only Viewable: I was hoping the rootsweb people would have our guestbook fixed way before now, but I have finally given up on them and am using a free one at Bravenet. I hope this one doesn't go down like the old rootsweb one, but rootsweb just isn't dependable. They have really messed up my files on their site and they are just as bad there as this site will be for some time to come until I can get it straightened out.

I hope you enjoy the new guestbook. I really don't have time to try to get hold of the people at rootsweb to haggle with them over the old guestbook. You can view the old posts in the old rootsweb guestbook by clicking the following link: View the Old Rootsweb Guestbook Not Working 7-21-2016. Only the viewing of that guestbook is available (Viewing not available 7-21-2016 and is being removed). The posting part of that guestbook has not been working for months. I apologize for allowing it to go on that long, but I hoped they would repair it and they did not.

29 May 2016

In the future, I will try to keep a record of the files I have worked on. I have been working on as many as possible or several per day, but so far have not been keeping a record of the files I have worked on. I once did this and it was quite helpful in some ways. To check to see which files I have recorded "worked on" check the following page: Today's Edited Pages. Some of them will be "new" or better said, newly replaced.

10 December 2015

My name is Annette Potter. I started my genealogy research many years ago (about 20 years) and recently had a huge website until Yahoo deleted it by mistake even though it had been paid for and was completely up to date. My research was dedicated to the Potter families related to those who originated in Eastern Kentucky and surrounding areas. I don't know if I will be able to recover my website, but I am trying to work on it each day. There was so much information on the website that I doubt seriously if it will ever be completely recovered. I had years of work put into the site and help from 100's of people who sent much information throughout the years.

The best I can figure is that years ago in 2009 I had an email address that was used to pay for my website and it was hacked. I wrote yahoo and told them about it and they blocked that email and assigned me a new one to use and pay my bill through. It remained that way for many years and suddenly on July 15 2015, Yahoo did auto maintenance and associated my website with that old blocked account. Not only did they destroy my website that took me 15 years of daily work to get where it was, they destroyed all my current emails which contained all the information sent to me throughout the years with 1000's of photos and information. Please understand that I have talked to them until I am blue in the face and even though I hear from some of you experts out there that there is something I can do, trust me, there is not anything I can do. It is gone and I have to recover it by starting all over again. I had a partial backup of the site and had not finished it. Who would ever believe that Yahoo would do such a thing to an up to date account!? Needless to say, I am very angry about it, but what's the use of whining and complaining. There is no use in it. I am just getting busy and trying to recover what I can. My eyes are not as good as they once were, but as long as they hold up, I will work on it and do as much as I can. If you have anything to send me to put back up, just send it to yaypotter@yahoo.com and I will add it asap.

17 August 2015

Have a pretty good start on getting the files back up. It's a slow process because all I have left to use are the files that are at archive.org and a partial backup on my hard drive. I also have some files at rootsweb, so there are a few places that have files to work with. I had made backups of the files on different hard drives that had gone bad and could not recover those, but I think it is going to be ok. I have more than 200 pages back up and going so far. Will keep plugging away at it until I am happy that most of the files are there again. Also, luckily I have a back up of the 1850 and 1860 Letcher County Kentucky Census that was my pride and joy, so I can work from that as well.

15 July 2015

What's new is that Yahoo has deleted all my precious files. They were paid up and they still deleted them. I'm angry and frustrated and sick about it. I doubt at my age if I can ever get this site back. Too many years were put into this site. It took me 15 years of daily work on here.
