May 1927 Flood Kingdom Come
From a Letter by Pascal Boggs
Son of Lilly Boggs and Martha Jones

I have a story to tell which might be of interest to your readers. I was only sixteen months old when the story happened but I've heard it many times from my parents and grandparents.

My father and mother are Lilly and Martha Jones Boggs. We lived in the last house in the head of Kingdom Come Creek. My grandparents on my Mother's side were Patton and and Cindy Jones and they lived across on the hill from my parents, Lilly and Martha Boggs.

At that time, it was May of 1927. I know every one has heard of the 27 flood on Kingdom Come. There were six of us in our family at the time, Lilly, Martha, Pansy, Ivis, Patton and Pascal. My sister, Pansy was seven years old and was the apple of her grandad's eye. (Patton Jones).

The night of the flood, our grandad had taken Pansy to his house to spend the night. It had been raining all day and the water was rising. The water was gushing all over the hill. A large gush of water came down the hill and started coming into their house. The ones that were there got upon the beds to get out of the water. Grandad thought he would be safer to go farther upon the hill, so loving Pansy like he did, he got her on his back and went out the door with her. That was the last saw of them alive.

The next day they found our grandad (Patton Jones) down at Blackey KY. He had caught his arm in a swinging bridge and was hanging on the bridge. They searched two months for Pansy. They found some of her clothes in the top of a tree beside the creek at Arthur Isons. He lived a couple of houses above the school house on Kingdom Come.

About two months later my parents heard they had found a hand sticking out of the sand beside the river at Ulva, Ky. Ulva is about 15 to 20 miles below Whitesburg. The guy that found Pansy buried her in a shallow grave until some one could identify who the body was. My dad heard about the man finding a child's body and he went down to Ulva and identified her as Pansy. The way he knew it was her, she had a brown birth mark on her neck and he knew it was her.

They brought her back and buried her beside her grandad, Patton Jones in the family cemetery on Patton Jones's property. The graves are still there at the head of Kindom Come, but the houses are all gone. Most of the land has been through strip mining and doesn't look the same.

My dad and mom sold their property in 1949 and moved to Charlestown, IN. My dad died in 1960 and mom died in 1973. My sister ivis died in 1999. She was next to Pansy. I have two other sisters to die. Irene died in 1949. Hazel died in 1975. I have three sisters living. Genevive, Norma lee and Virginia, and a brother Patton living.

I moved from Kingdom Come in 1949. My wife Gracie (daughter of the late Grant and Mary Ison of Kindom Come) and I have 3 children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. It has been a long road since 1927 but God is always there to help us through any sorrows we may have along the way.

Kindgom Come will always be home to us in a way because through the years there have always been so many wonderful memories of wonderful people that our lives have touched. Life is so precious and we should enjoy it daily to the fullest because we have no promise of tomorrow.

Love to everybody
