Mary Ellen Johnson, 70, of Rockhouse Fork, Virgie, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at her home. She was born in Letcher County, Feb. 19, 1933, a daughter of the late Simon and Martha Tackett Burke. She was a homemaker and a member of the Speight Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, Humphrey Junior Johnson of Speight; three sons, Danny Wayne Johnson of Robinson Creek, Lynville Johnson of Long Fork of Virgie, Lonnie Johnson of Speight; three brothers, Willie Burke of Fort Pierce, Fla., Boonie Burke of McRoberts, Bobby Burke of Louisville; two sisters, Sarah Bentley of Louisville and Myra Caudill of Melvin; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 11, in the Speight Church of  Christ with Brad Taylor, Edley Newsome, Deane Lyons, Greg Johnson and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Mary Ellen Johnson Cemetery, Speight. Arrangements are under direction of Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Ernest Burke, son of the late Simon and Martha Tackett Burke, was born at Speight, Kentucky on June 15, 1919. He died at his residence in McRoberts on Wednesday, January 17, 1996, making him 76 years, seven months and two days of age at the time of his death. Ernest was preceded in death by one son, Ben Denton Burke, a sister, Morine Hardin and brother Oscar Burke. Survivors include his wife, Ardela, of McRoberts; stepmother, Gertrude Burke of Wheelwright; grandson, Joe Burke, Jr. of Ermine, whom he raised as a son; sons: James D Burke of Heidelberg, Kentucky; sisters; Delores Betterton of Ft. Pierce, Florida; Mary Johnson of Speight; Maury Caudill of Wheelwright; Sara Bentley of Louisville; brothers: Bonie Burke of McRoberts; Willie Burke of Ft. Pierce; George Burke of Louisville; Frank, Elvis Buddy and Morris Burke, all of Wheelwright; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Ernest has been a member of the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church for over sixteen years. He worked tirelessly at the church as a maintenance man and custodian. He was a retired coal miner, having worked in and around mining for forty-three years. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America for over sixty years. He and his wife Ardela celebrated 58 years of marriage last year. Funeral services for Ernest Burke were conducted from the McRoberts Old Regular baptist Church at McRoberts, Kentucky on Saturday, January 20, 1996 at 11 a.m. The officiating ministers were Adrian Hall and Gerald Hopkins, while family members and friends served as pallbearers. Burial took place in the McRoberts Cemetery at McRoberts, Kentucky. Banks Funeral Home of Fleming-Neon, Kentucky was in charge of the arrangements.
