Obituary: Donald Lee Combs

Donald Lee Combs, 91 died Sunday November 28, 2021, at Baptist Health Hospital Richmond KY. Don was born in Hazard KY, August 31 1930 to the late George Washington and Emily Jane (Sumner) Combs.

During his life Don owned several businesses in Berea Ky including the Tastee-Freez Drive-In Restaurant, and Don's Discount Dollar Store. In partnership with others his business ventures included The Prince Royal Motel, Arby's Restaurant, Sonny's Restaurants in Central KY, and Save-A-Lot Grocery Stores throughout the state as part of Saver Group Inc. Most recently Don was the owner of Combs Apartments in Berea.

Don was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the American Legion and Rotary Club. He received a Special Recognition Award from The Berea Chamber of Commerce on November 14, 2019 for a lifetime of entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to Berea's Economic Development, he was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Other than his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers: George Combs, John Combs, and Charles Combs; three sisters: Thelma Combs, Judy Combs and Betty (Combs) Jones.

Don is survived by one sister Jackie (Combs) Lake of Berea, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 11am – 2pm, Saturday at Lakes Funeral Home, with at Lakes Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 2 pm at Lakes Funeral Home. Military burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Attendees are requested to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

Pall Bearers are: Rick Thomas, Jerry Little, Dan Ball, Danny Ballinger, Jeff Johnson, and Gary Jones. Honorary Pall Bearers are: Wendall Combs, Dale Combs, Larry Noe, Joe Walters, Gary Riley, Carson Riley, J.C. Dickerson, and Luther Little. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallaceton Baptist Church.

Betty Mary Jones 79, widow of James Hershel Jones, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday March 20, 2019 in Berea, KY. Mrs. Jones was born in Hazard, KY March 12, 1940 to the late George Washington and Emily Jane (Sumner) Combs.

Betty and Hershel were in the restaurant business in Berea, KY starting in the mid 1960’s with the Tastee-Freez drive-in restaurant, then the Colonel Drive-In Restaurant, and ultimately The People’s Restaurant. When Hershel passed away 1986 Betty continued to operate the People’s Restaurant until it was destroyed by fire in 1995. Betty re-built on the site and opened Sweet Betty’s restaurant in 1996 which was in operation until 2005.

Betty is of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Wallaceton Baptist Church. Other than her husband and parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Combs, John Combs, and Charles Combs. One sister-in-law Joan Combs. Two sisters, Thelma Combs, and Judy Combs. One step-son Michael Jones. One brother-in-law Wendell Lake. And one very special pet, her cat Miss Kitty, who preceded Betty in death by one week.

Mrs. Jones is survived by one son Gary Jones of Orlando, FL; one daughter, Tami Jones Riley and her husband Gary of Berea. Three God-daughters, Audrey Toohey Geary of Glasgow, KY, Fran McCloud of Waldport, OR, and Karen Todd of Berea, KY. Her grandchildren, Morgan Riley Sexton and her husband Nick of Glendale, AZ, and Carson Riley of Berea. Two God-grandchildren, Erika Toohey Pendleton and Brandon Condiff, both of Glasgow, KY. And one step-grandson Alex Webb of Bee Springs, KY. One brother Don Combs of Berea. One sister Jackie Lake of Berea and her son Jeff Johnson along with his children Cameron Johnson and Taylor Johnson. One sister-in-law Nellie Combs of Waco, KY., special caregiver Arlene Allen, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4PM – 8PM on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1:00PM Monday, March 25, 2019 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Joey Kays officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Jeff Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Doug Fritz, Harold Eden, Lothar Baumann, and Howard Mayfield.
