Source: CHARLES O. CARDWELL was the first born child of Thomas Perrin and Ellen South Cardwell. He grew to manhood raised in one of the most wealthy families of Breathitt Co., Kentucky. The Cardwells and Souths owned thousands of acres of land in this county. Both the Cardwells and Souths were active in the politics both locally and state. He practiced law in his hometown of Jackson, Kentucky. He was elected Breathitt Co., Judge in 1888. He was elected Breathitt Co. attorney. By 1900 census he had moved to Stillwater in Wolfe Co., Kentucky. He gave up politics by this time and was listed as a Merchant. Between 1906-1910 he moved his family to Oklahoma.

They had the following 10 children: Mary M, Elmira & Elvira (twins), William H, Leander B, Margaret, Isaac W, Nathan, Sarah J, James Goodloe, After Jane died he married Arminta Cardwell 7-28-1887 in Breathitt County KY.

"Wm M Combs one of the oldest citizens of Jackson died last Sunday night after a long illness. His funeral was conducted at the Baptist Church Tuesday by Rev R I Baker, after which his remains were interred in the family burying grounds on the point in the southern part of the town. The remains of Goodloe Combs, his son who died about a year ago and was at another place on the hill were removed and buried by the side of his father. Mr Combs has been identified with the interest of Breathitt County and once its organization having held of ___ (can not make out) in some capacity for more than 40 years. He was probably the wealthiest man in the county at the time of his death. He leaves a large family for all of whom he has abundantly provided."
