Article, Louisville Courier Journal Pikeville, Pike Co KY, January 5, 1925 Escaped Lifer, Slayer of Two, Is Killed In Battle With Posse Sol Fleming, Twice Sentenced to Die, Was Paroled, Then Slew Another, and Fled Prison
Special The Courier-Journal. Pikeville, Ky., Jan. 5.---Sol Fleming, an escaped life convict of the Frankfort Reformatory, was shot and killed today by Deputy Sheriff George Johnson and a possee on Beefhide Creek, thirty miles from Pikeville, it was reported here tonight. Details of the shooting are lacking, but, it is reported Fleming shot and wounded a woman during the battle.
Fleming was under a life sentence for the murder of Sid Tackett at Weeksbury, Ky., several years ago and about a year ago he escaped a gurard while on a visit to his mother Mrs. J. J. Fleming, who was sick on the long Fork of Shelby. It is reported that he since had engaged in operating a still on Beefhide Creek of Shelby.
Prior to Flemings conviction at Prestonsburg for killing Tackett, he had been convicted at Whitesburg some thirty years ago for participation in killing Jemima Hall, an aged woman on Boone Creek in Letcher County. On two trials for this crime, it was said here tonight, the verdict resulted in the death penalty, but a third trial reduced it to life imprisonment. He was out on parole when he killed Tackett.
Authorities here tonight were asked what disposition should be made of Fleming's body.
