Daniel Van Johnson: July 5, 1918 - July 2, 2007. Daniel Van Johnson, Sr., son of the late John Henry Johnson and Lee Oma (Potter) Johnson, was born in Jackhorn, KY, on July 5, 1918. He entered eternal life Monday, July 2, 2007. He was 88 years old at the time of his passing.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Opal Oneida Land Johnson. He was the last surviving sibling of 11 children. Daniel is survived by the following children: Daniel V. Johnson, Jr. (Andrea), Spotsylvania, V A, Oma Lou Blue (Bill-- deceased), Seveirville, TN, Brenda A. Sparks (Larry), Mayking, KY, Celeste Johnson (James), McRoberts, KY, Noah Lee Champion (Fran), son of Gladys Sexton, Greenville, TN, Anthony Holbrook (Elizabeth), Eric Holbrook, Jennifer Meeks (Steve), Lovene Bentley (Craig), all of Kona, KY; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Daniel is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, to mourn his passing.
Daniel worked in the coal mines from an early age until he was injured. He then worked into retirement at Whitesburg ARH. He was active in the union at ARH, and was a very dedicated president and union organizer for the United Mine Workers. Daniel became a devout Christian and was baptized into the Hemphill Church of Christ in March 2006. Daniel was a dedicated gardener. He loved to hunt, fish, and had a great love for songbirds. He was a great storyteller and loved to entertain his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with his many tales. Daniel loved spending time with his family and will be missed by all.
