Notes for JAMES (STODGHILL) STURGILL:

It is believed that all who spell their name as Sturgill, Sturgell and Stargil are direct descendants of James Sturgill and Ann Calloway, prior to this, James family spelled their last name as Stodghill, some of Lewis Sturgill's descendants spelled it Sturgeon.

 

James nad wife Ann Calloway made their first home in Orange County Virginia, they lived on a farm along Swift Run Creek near the town of Stanardsville, Virginia. After disposing of all his land, to include that which he had inherrited from his father, he moved the family to Alleghany County, North Carolina about 1771 where he settled on the North side of New River, due to border disputes a survey of the property of James on the New River was determined to be in North Carolina, which is now part of the New River State Park. James and Ann buried on this land.

Francis used a land grant for 100 acres in Grayson County, Virginia in 1782, and obtained 500 more acres from land warrents possibly obtained for Military service in the Revolutionery War. In 1798 he received 3 more land grants from the state of North Carolina which contained the land originally settled by his father. In 1802 he sold the 500 acres located in Grayson County, Virginia, and moved in with his father to care for him, his father died the following year in 1803.

Notes for JOHN STURGILL:

John Sturgill and Jemima Wells made their first home in Ashe County, North Carolina near the fork of the New River, which had been owned by his grandfather. In 1804 the land was sold to brother James Sturgill. In 1806 John bought a tract of land in Grayson County, Virginia which was sold to Moses Halsey. In 1812 John moved to Letcher County, Kentucky, after settling there for awhile, along the Cumberland River, buying a farm in Lee County, Virginia (now Wise) from brother James who had bought it in 1812. John later moved to Harlan County, Kentucky, then back to Wise County, Virginia. Then back again to Letcher County, Kentucky where wife Jemima Wells died in 1856 and is buried there. John now alone returned to  Wise County, Virginia. This was during the Civil War period and he settled in a small valley called "Crackers Neck". No stone exists today.
