Levi Potter Obituary
Mt Eagle, Whitesburg, Letcher Co KY, 24 June, 1937
Venerable Citizen Of Elkhorn Section Passes

Levi Potter age 65 years passed away at his home below Burdine on Monday of this week. He was the son of Ben and Jane Gardner Potter, his forbears being among the first to settle in the Elkhorn section. In early life he was married to Sylvania Lyttle and to this union was born 11 children one boy having died at the age of 16 and one daughter Cora Ratliff passing away at the age of 26. There are 9 children who survive together with their mother. The children are Victoria Belcher, Pearlie Bentley, Jane Wright, William Potter, Verda Belcher, Hattie Bumgardner, Goldie Vanover, Lee Potter, and Rosie Mullins all grown. One sister still remains Mrs. Nancy Evelyn Adams wife of the late John Adams. Levi Potter spent his entire lifetime around in the upper waters of the Elkhorn section, there he was born, married and spent his life. He was ahard worker and amassed considerable lands and money. He was of the old type, one that loved home life better than the ways of the world, and he will be missed by his family and friends and those who knew him.

While he was in the hospital at Jenkins he professed a hope in the Saviour and attached himself to the church and was taken from the hospital to the water where Eld. Ballard Baker administered the rites of Baptism to him while Dr. Shepherd and the nurse from the Jenkins hospital stood by. He spent the last few days of his life praising his Saviour and died in full confidence of the home that awaits the redeemed above. Funeral services were held on the spacious lawn near the residence on Wednesday by Elds. Stanley Adkins, and G. B. Adams and burial was in the family plot across from Burdine.

Our Thanks

We wish in this sad hour to extend to all our humble appreciations for the many kindnesses shown us during the sickness of our father Levi Potter. We will never forget Dr. Shepherd and the hospital attendants for their kindness and all they did for our dear father, but it was God's will that he should go and we bow to His will, knowing that with Hiam all things are done well. We extend to the Ministers who came to the hospital and spoke a kind word and the many, many, people who dropped in and wept with us. We will never forget any of you and we feel that God will bless you all. In the passing of our father we have lost a real friend. We realize that, but we feel that our loss is His gain and that some day, sometime we can meet him and greet him again in that city above. May Heaven's richest blessings rest upon all, is the prayer of a heart broken mother and children.
