Obituary: Virgie Smith Potter 23 Jul 1924 - 9 May 2011 Virgie S. Potter, age 86, of Ashland, Ohio, passed away after a short illness at Hospice of North Central Ohio. Virgie was born July 23, 1924, to Grace and Willie Smith in Elliott County, Kentucky. Virgie was married to Homer Potter August 29, 1946 in Greenup, Kentucky. She was a Rosie Riveter and assembled shell casings in a munitions plant during WWII. She worked for Montgomery Ward, and State Farm Insurance, was a Cub Scout Leader, an in-house Hospice volunteer, homemaker, loving wife, and mother, with a wonderful gift of giving selflessly to others. She loved spending time with family, gardening and looking at photos. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Willie Smith, and son-in-law, Duane Vance. She is survived by her husband Homer Potter of Ashland, OH., two sons, David (Pam) Potter of Ashland, OH., and Quentin Potter (Cindy Burnell) of Columbus, OH., a daughter, Linda Vance of Washington Court House, OH., two grandchildren, Lindsey (Nathan) Young of Ashland, OH., and Josh Vance of Washington Court House, OH., one great-granddaughter, Carlee Jane Young, one brother, Harold (Maye) Smith, one sister, Goldie (John) Justice, beloved sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, Kentucky. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery located in Lawrence County, Ky., at the mouth of Blaine Creek and the Big Sandy River. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011, and Thursday morning from 9a.m. until service time.
Obituary: Homer Q Potter 18 Dec 1918 - 22 Jun 2013 Homer Q. Potter, 94, of Ashland, passed away peacefully June 22, 2013, at his residence. Homer was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Lawrence County, Ky., living most of his life in Columbus. The first in his family to attend college, Homer was the 1942 class president at Berea College where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in both history and political science. As a member of the "Greatest Generation," he served this nation for 30 years with the U. S. Department of Defense and served six Commanders in Chief from President Truman to President Carter. His supply operations expertise supported all branches of military efforts in Korea and Vietnam. He loved to discuss politics and was passionate about achieving a memorial, now located in Louisa, Ky., dedicated to Fredrick Moore Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Homer was married to Virgie Smith on August 30, 1946, and was preceded in death by his beloved wife in 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Ethel Soard Potter, sisters, Elizabeth and Roberta, brothers, Martin Jr., Creed and James, and son-in-law, Duane Vance. Homer is survived by two sons, David (Pam) Potter of Ashland, Ohio, and Quentin (Cynthia Burnell) of Avon, a daughter, Linda Vance of Washington Courthouse, grandchildren, Lindsey Young of Ashland, OH., and Josh Vance of Washington Courthouse, great-granddaughters, Carlee Jane and Hayden Grace Young, sisters, Mildred Ryan and Edith Redding, and beloved brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, Ky. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery in Lawrence County, Ky., at the mouth of Blaine Creek and the Big Sandy River. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
