Vernie W. Stewart, age 94, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the Pikeville Medical Center. Vernie was born on Feb. 5, 1928 to his parents the late William W. Stewart and Delia Mullins Stewart. He was the husband of Betty Bentley Stewart, a retired coal miner, and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He also served his country honorably in the United States Army during Korean War.
Along with his parents, Vernie was preceded in death by three brothers, Benny, Kernie, and Jack Stewart, two sisters, Minerva and Bertha, and three grandsons, Shane Kelly, Austin Mullins, and Preston Dingess.
Along with his wife, Vernie is survived by seven children, Sherry (James) Kelly, Ronnie Stewart, Tony (Donna Sue) Stewart, Terry Don (Misty) Stewart, Verna Kay (Jeff) McPeek, Kevin (Jessica) Stewart, Ruth Addington, five step children, Debbie (Mike) Slone, Sherry (Ben) Morgan, Cynthia Casebolt, DeLisa Mullins, Conley W. Mullins, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of loving family and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home. Church services will be Thursday and Friday at 7p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 1 P.M. at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home with Garrett Mullins, Tony Bentley, and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Bentley Cemetery at Bear Fork.
