Swindle did not denote the Englishman engaged in fraudulent transactions, as one might suppose, but is merely a respelling of Swindell "dweller in valley where swine were bred," or a corruption of Swindale "pig valley", a village in Westmoreland.

William Swindle (Swandal) was killed in the Indian massacre on Good Friday, 22 Mar 1622 at Berkley’s Plantation 66 miles from James City, Virginia. James City is known today as Jamestown. HIGH TIDES Historical Society editors vol. 8 no. 2 Hyde Co., NC. states that the first Swindell to arrive in the Virginia Colony, was Thomas Swinhow. In a muster taken 30 Jan. 1624, he is reported as having arrived on the "Diana" and living in the Maine of the Corporation of James City. In a circa 1626 listing of the Corporation of Charles City, Thomas (Swindle) Swinhow held 300 acres by patent. He was later in 1638, listed as 'kilt by Indians . However, a Thomas Swindell was one of 78 people who arrived safely in Westmorland County, VA. in 1654. An indentured servant, he was transported by John Walton and John Baynal, VA. planters. Research indicates that Thomas Swindell moved across the bay to North Hampton County on the Eastern shore of VA. He and a Daniel Swindell were related, possibly as Father and Son, and both are mentioned as tiltable in that county in 1666. Thomas Swindell had a son, John Swindell, who married the daughter of George Willis. Old North Hampton County, VA. records show that George Willis gave the couple a cow in 1668, a substantial gift for that time period. A Thomas Swindell was one of 78 people who arrived safely in Westmorland County, VA. in 1654. An indentured servant, he was transported by John Walton and John Baynal, VA. planters; 1729 Thomas Swindell, Cooper, of Beaufort Precinct, Bath Co. N.C. purchased 100 acres on the north side of the Pamlico River from James Singleton........Check out the Swindell of Cheshire County, England as there is a Hyde twp there containing several Swindells of similar names....... He had over 300 acres by patent; 02/25/1660 Thomas Swindle was in Northhampton, Va and was granted 400 acres of land. (Virginia Land Records, p. 379) 33. Notes for WILLIAM SWINDELL: On May 28, 1753 a warrant was issued by George Turner, a Justice of the Peace, for his arrest. John Spencer alleged that William Swindellhad mismarked a cow and marked another cow formerly belonging to him, Hohn Spencer. He contended it was contrary to the peace to do so. The warrant states that William Swindell was to be found taken into custody to answer the charge. He married (2) UNK MARRIAGE #1 1785. Notes for WILLIS SWINDELL: Pvt. Willis Swindell served in the Revolutionary War at a very young age. He was said to have been a spy for the Continental Army. He was accepted for the DAR as a supplement, p. 205: "Swindle (Swindell) Willis b 3-5-1763 d 5-9-1851 m x Pvt NC." According to Syble Sayre, he was appointed patroller in Captain Thomas Daniels' district in 1800 or 1808.205 He was a member of the Mattamuskeet Primitive Church in 1808. He would have been married at this time to Ashley's mother (Willis' second wife). Also on this church's roster was a couple with the last name of Ashley. Quite possibly these two were Ashley's grandparents (this is still speculation).206 He moved from Randolph Co., North Carolina to Henry Co., Indiana. Because Caswell shut his eyes when he laughed, it became known as the "Caswell Squint" and it is prevalent in the family today. Caswell "was a private in the Company commanded by Captain James C. Neill in the Regiment of Tennessee Militia commanded by Colonel Alexander Lowery, in the war with Creek Indians Sparta, on or about 09/07/1814, for the term of six months, and continued in active service in said war for the term of six months and 20 days and was honorably discharged at Fayetteville. The Camden Chronicle, one of the early newspapers of Benton County, reported on August 23, 1901 that, Thomas Swindle was born in North Carolina and had been brought by his parents to Tennessee when he was about 4 years old. He lived in Gismunda for over 60 years. On June 10, 1904, the Camden Chronicle stated that "Thomas Swindle, who had been in bad health for some time, died Sunday at the advanced age of 93 years, 3 months and 20 days, and was the oldest man in the county. Mr. Swindle was born Feb. 9, 1811. He was a Methodist, and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and was licensed to exhort about 1850-1860. ( to exhort- is to 'Preach') He first married Miriam Anderson on Jan. 15, 1833 and had 12 children. Eight of them lived to be grown. 4 died in infancy. He sold 9 3/4 acre of land to the Methodist Church on 16 Jan. 1904 for $50. He also gave them 3/4 acre per land records 1867. His second marriage was to Mrs. N.F. Harris on Dec. 12 1873. In 1873 he received the degree of F. & A.M. at Camden Lodge # 179. He was buried at Shiloah Cemetery with Mason honors. His first wife, Miriam, was the daughter of John & Elizabeth Anderson. John entered a modest acreage on the Little Birdsong Creek in 1822. He and his family lived for years west of Chalk Level. In the little Shiloah Methodist Churchyard at Gismunda is a monument to ISAAC ANDERSON, (1820-1881) , which bears the inscription, "Son of John Anderson, one of Benton County's first settlers." He was a Farmer & Trader. William Anderson Swindle was born in Tennessee. , Benton County, and married Angelina Smith on Nov. 10, 1850 in that area. Angelina was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Lewis Smith. They had 8 children. All of these children were aunts and uncles of Dr. W.T. Swindell. William was a farmer and trader by occupation. He volunteered in the war under General Jackson. He made application for a pension as a Confederate Soldier. On Jan. 30, 1914 The Son Dr. William Thomas Swindle, gave a birthday party in honor of his Father, Uncle Billie Swindle's 80th birthday, in Arkansas, just a short time before he died. William and Angelina were found living in Arkansas in 1860, and back to Benton County, TN., in 1870. The idea of William A. living in AR. and TE. both from time to time, indicates a reason for Dr. W.T. to move to Arkansas for a Medical Practice location. He must have known the area. William A. had enlisted from ARK. in April or May of 1863, in the Confederacy. (Company I, 55th Arkansas Infantry Regiment). In his application for a pension, it states that he served under Capt. William Black and Colonel Shaver. He had battles in Missouri and Siloam, AR. He was wounded by a shot with a 'Mini Ball' through the wrist and into the back, in the battle in Siloam. He was furloughed, not discharged, in AR., until May 1864, when he returned to TENNESSEE. He evidently lived most all his life in TE. and after Feb. 1911, he returned to AR. to live with his son Dr. W.T. or close to him, and died in AR. in 1914. Buried in Siloam Cemetery, Maynard, AR. He was married to Angelina SMITH on Oct 11 1850 in Benton Co., Tennessee. Angelina SMITH was born in 1832 in Benton Co., Tennessee. She died about 1860 in Randolph Co., Arkansas.
