CENTURY OF COUNTRY Biography of Anita Carter:
"Anita, the youngest of the three daughters of
Maybelle and Ezra Carter, made her first public appearance in 1937 with her
sisters on The Popeye Club, on radio station WOPI Bristol, Virginia, singing
Beautiful Brown Eyes. Two years later, the three sisters joined the Carter
Family on the border station XERA out of Del Rio, Texas. In 1941, the girls
joined the family on WBT Charlotte, North Carolina.
Following the folding of the Carter Family,
Mother Maybelle and the girls got together, in 1943, as Mother Maybelle and the
Carter Sisters (See The Carter Family). In 1951, Anita got together with Hank
Snow (the Singing Ranger) and the Rainbow Ranch Boys for the double-sided
Country smash hit Bluebird Island (Top 5)/Down The Trail Of Achin’ Hearts, on
RCA Victor.
In 1953-1954, Anita recorded for Columbia and
then in 1955, RCA decided to promote Anita as a Pop performer as part of ‘Nita,
Rita & Ruby with Rita Robbins (real name Ruby Winters, the sister of Don
Winters) and Ruby Wright (daughter of Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright) while also
recording Anita as a solo Country singer.
The group appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and were
named "Most Promising Country Group" in the Cash Box Disc Jockey Poll of 1956.
However, by 1957, the idea had run out of steam, as Anita was busy touring with
the Carter Family. Anita went on to record for Cadence (1957), Jamie (1960) and
Mercury (1963).
During the 60’s, Anita did a lot of back-up work
and her distinctive soprano voice could be heard on many recordings. Anita
returned to RCA in 1965 and to the Country charts in 1966, with a pair of
medium-sized successes, I’m Gonna Leave You (Top 50) and in 1967 Love Me Now
(While I am Living) (Top 70).
In 1968, Anita teamed up with Waylon Jennings for
the Top 5 duet I Got You. In 1968, Anita signed with United Artists and chalked
up a Top 70 hit with To Be A Child Again and then, the following year, she
teamed up with Johnny Darrell for the Top 50 The Coming of the Roads.
At the end of 1970, Anita signed with Capitol and
the following year, she had a Top 50 hit, Tulsa County and followed with her
final chart entry, A Whole Lotta Lovin’, which went Top 70.
At the end of the 70’s, Anita became involved in
TV production and in 1979 served as talent coordinator, consultant and performer
on The Unbroken Circle: A Tribute to Mother Maybelle Carter. In 1982, Anita
served as Associate Producer on the movie Country Gold, in which she appeared.
She also acted as talent coordinator and consultant on the 1986 CBS-TV movie,
Stagecoach. Anita passed away on July 29, 1999 after a long illness."
