More about Joseph Damrell and Phoebe Wright
Submitted by Jerry Davis:
Joseph Damrell was born November 8, 1843 in southern
Breathitt County Kentucky. He was the third son of Samuel Damrell and Sarah
Elizabeth Stamper Damrell. He had two older brothers, John and William, and
three younger siblings, Margaret, Franklin, and Elizabeth.
He was married to Phoebe Wright in Campton Kentucky on July
12, 1861 by the Reverend John D. Spencer. He joined the Union Army forces, the
47th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Company E, along with his brother, John, at
Irvine Kentucky on July 27, 1863 and was discharged on December 26, 1864 at
Lexington Kentucky.
He returned to Breathitt County, later Lee County Kentucky,
for the next twenty years. He moved to Clover Bottom in Jackson County
Kentucky in approx. 1884 and later moved to Rockcastle County in approx. 1889.
He settled in the Wallaceton-Flat Gap region of Madison and Rockcastle County.
He operated a store and sawmills along with various other
businesses. His wife, Phoebe, died on January 3, 1913 and according to family
legend, Joseph dressed her in her burial clothes and slept with the body that
night. The next day, her body was taken to the area she had previously picked
as her burial place and buried between two large pine trees on a knoll behind
their home.
Joseph went home and dreamt she was turned the wrong
direction and went the next day and resumed her body and turned her around. He
remarried Sallie Vaughn Roberts in Richmond Kentucky, on June 20, 1918 and she
was his wife at his death on December 20, 1927. The firm of Rominger and Coyle
buried him on December 24, 1927 for the sum of 100.00 dollars.
Phoebe Wright Damrell was the wife of Joseph Damrell and the
daughter of Hiram and Susan Profit Wright. She was born in Letcher County
Kentucky, where her father's people were a predominant family in the
community.
She was a first cousin to the famous Kentucky lawman, "Devil
John Wright". She had seven sisters, Polly, Celia, Jane, Susan, Emily,
Charlotte, and Georgia Ann. She had a brother and sister by her fathers'
second marriage to Comfort Lawson, Hiram and Clarinda. She married Joseph
Damrell in Campton, Wolfe County Kentucky on July 12, 1861.
This union was to produce 11 children (4 sons & 7
daughters), William, Sarah, Margaret, Susan, Phoebe, Josephine, Elizabeth,
Emanuel, Dovie, Joseph, and John. She was married to Joseph for fifty-two
years until her death in 1913. She had predetermined her burial place and
became the first individual buried in this Cemetery.
Thanks to Jerry Davis for his submissions to
this family.
